The Royal Canadian Legion supports youth and cadets. We work to ensure that they understand and carry forward Canada’s proud tradition of Remembrance.
Youth and Students
Branch 641 Barrhaven encourages young people to take an active role in honouring Veterans in meaningful and lasting ways. We hold Remembrance ceremonies in schools, speak with students and youth organizations about the sacrifices of those who served, and invite youth to join community and Branch commemorative events.
Branch 641 invites students to enter the Youth Remembrance Contest with their posters or writing. Find out how students and schools can take part.
Educators who want to teach about Remembrance and Canada’s military history can find many helpful resources from Veterans Affairs Canada. These include lesson plans and learning materials for all ages, helping teachers inspire students to understand and honour Canada’s Veterans.
Branch 641 Support to Youth Organizations
Cadets

The Royal Canadian Legion has a long-standing partnership with Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers (JCR). Through their involvement, these youth gain valuable experience and build skills in leadership, citizenship, and physical and mental fitness.
Cadets help with projects like the Poppy Campaign and other service activities. These experiences inspire young people to remember and carry on the legacy of Canada’s Veterans. Their efforts strengthen communities and keep the spirit of Remembrance alive. In return, Legion Branches offer financial support to help these youth grow and succeed.
The Legion sponsors Cadet Corps and Squadrons across Canada and gives the Cadet Medal of Excellence (see details about the medal here: Annex E of Cadet Administrative and Training Order 13-16) to those who show outstanding citizenship and service. Every year, top Cadets from the Sea, Army, and Air Cadet Leagues are chosen to be wreath bearers at the National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa.
To recognize their service, the Legion gives all graduating Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers a free one-year Legion membership.

Youth Track and Field
The Ontario Command Track and Field program gives young athletes across the province a unique chance to compete. It is the only program in Ontario with a Summer Track & Field Championship for youth aged 17 and under.
Athletes start by competing at the Zone and District levels. Top performers move on to the Provincial Championship. Those who do well at Provincials can compete at the National level and represent Ontario as part of TEAM “O”, showing their talent, dedication, and sportsmanship on a bigger stage.
